One of the UK’s landmark buildings has been given a 21st century facelift with the help and support of Sign Specialists. To provide the latest, most prominent display, we were tasked with producing and installing illuminated signage to four sides of the building’s tower at heights of around 40 metres. The architectural icon that is Fort Dunlop was built in 1916 and is immediately recognisable to users of the M6 near Birmingham where it towers over the southbound carriageway. Once the world’s largest factory, the building was originally home to global tyre manufacturer, Dunlop Rubber Company. When large scale production ceased in the 1980s the site stood largely derelict until a major redevelopment programme twenty years later. Reborn as a thriving commercial hub, the rejuvenated […]
Samuel Jones – Smoke & Ale House
Based in the heart of Exeter’s bustling quayside development, Samuel Jones offers comfortable casual dining and drinking with a fresh and contemporary urban feel. The building itself holds a lot of history, in fact it was originally owned by a Cider Company until Samuel Jones took ownership of the property in 1878 with the intention of increasing Exeter’s trading powers as well as improving his own successful wine and spirit importing business. The building has housed a number of nightspots over the years and boasted the likes of David Bowie, Mud and KC and the Sunshine Band. More recently, St Austell Brewery’s investment of £1.5 million breathed new life into this truly historic building, reigniting Samuel’s dream of bringing the finest ales, wines and spirits […]
Suzuki C&M McDonald
For more than 30 years Sign Specialists Ltd has worked side by side with Suzuki G.B PLC on the development of their car showroom signage. During this time, we have designed, manufactured & installed signage at over 250 sites across the UK, most recently in Scotland for the C&M McDonald dealership, possibly our best Suzuki installation to date. The initial stages of installation required an extensive survey of the showroom in order to fully understand the possibilities; detailed drawings of the site were then produced so that concepts could be created. Based on our design drawings, Suzuki were able to see exactly how their signage would look once installed. On many occasions, including this one, suggestions or alterations are made to the concept in order […]
Walsall Football Club & Sign Specialists Ltd
Back in 1888, the two leading clubs in Walsall, namely Walsall Swifts and Walsall Town, merged to form Walsall Town Swifts, eventually becoming Walsall FC in 1895. Throughout the years, the club has seen many up’s and down’s with many of the country’s biggest clubs playing at the stadium at various points along the way. Towards the start of the 2011 campaign, the club agreed a 2 year stand-sponsorship deal with Sign Specialists because of the outstanding commercial support the company had given to the club over the past 20 years. During that time, Sign Specialists had been main front-of-shirt sponsors, back-of-shirt sponsors, stadium advertisers, match day sponsors and tremendous supporters of the Walsall FC Community Programme. The overwhelming support had been made possible by the […]

How Helvetica Conquered the World
Wherever you go in the world, you’ll find it very hard to find a graphic designer who isn’t familiar with the font. Originally released in 1957 under its original name ‘Neue Haas Grotesk’, Helvetica is one of the most well-known typefaces among designers and non-designers alike, but why? Many people attribute its popularity to Apple, and Steve Jobs’ decision to incorporate Helvetica into the Apple operating system. But the typeface had already joined the halls of design classics long before computers were on the scene. Swiss designers Emil Ruder and Armin Hofmann were on the faculty at the Basel School of Design, and it was their teachings that gave rise to the Swiss Style of design during the 1950s and 60s. Ruder was the typography […]
